Chequamegon Memorial Post 690
#StillServing
The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States is a Federally chartered veterans organization that traces its origins to the aftermath of the Spanish-American War of 1898, with smaller local veteran’s organizations merging together over the following decades to consolidate into a national organization of veterans of overseas service.
Since then the VFW has been a leading advocate for veteran’s causes as well as for supporting currently deployed service members and their families.
Chequamegon Memorial Post 690 was founded in 1945, and remains an important force in the Ashland area for patriotism and veteran’s affairs. With numerous programs for veterans and community members, as well as annual fundraisers for a variety of causes Post 690 is proud to be an active member of the community.
Membership in the VFW is open to all honorably discharged US veterans that have served in a war, campaign, or expedition on foreign soil or in hostile waters. For full details, see the National website.

Brat Fry Fundraiser
Every summer Post 690 holds several Brat Fry Fundraisers at Taste of Wisconsin in Ashland, with a different veteran’s cause each year. Previous programs have included the UW MIA Recovery Project and Camp Benesi.
Honor Guard
Along with our brothers and sisters in American Legion Post 90, the VFW is jointly responsible or the solemn tradition of providing Final Honors at the funerals for departed local veterans, as well as providing color guard services at a variety of local events and programs.
Patriot’s Pen
Each year, nearly 68,800 students in sixth through eighth grades enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest for a chance to win their share of nearly $1 million in state and national awards. Post 690 is proud to work with local schools to facilitate this program.
